1.
AND SO IT STARTED
Once upon a time, in a time not very long back and in a place not very far from here, a little helpless cry emerged into the world. The lazy Sunday morning was interrupted with a little huslte and bustle as the air touched the tiny creature for the very first time. “It’s a girl!” they all cried. They all rejoiced. A new time was born. They all knew. They did not know what was to come but they knew that it wouldn’t be like anything before and they weren’t sure if it would be good or bad but they awaited it with hopeful yet wary smiles. They all scurried about in lost wander and took turns to hold her in their arms.
“She’s beautiful,” said the oldest in the room, “good fortune awaits her!”. The rest in the room were reassured by the wisdom of the generation. “She has the most curious eyes,” said another with a little precaution. The mother was yet to see the life she just gifted to the world. She lay weak and smiled at the words she heard. “She will find the luckiest man, I can assure you.”
The little girl stared into the faces that seemed to be busy praising her good fortune. Would they look back later and wonder how it all turned out to be the way it did? The little girl remained unfazed. She had already planned her life. At this moment, she just longed to be left alone with her mother so she could finally begin her journey. The way things were meant to be.
“Have you thought of a name for her?”
“I don’t know yet. Maybe in a few days a name will take upon who she is.”
The first time mother had done no prior planning before bringing this adorable little baby to this world. She did not know what preperations were required but she knew that she would have to give the baby a name. Not sure if she would have a boy or a girl, the monther decided to let the baby define its name. She was always bothered by how some people did not look like their what their names suggested they should look like. She always felt her name was not meant for her. She definitely did not want her child to go through the same misfortune. So she decided to wait.
As the young mother held her baby for the first time, she could not help but think about her own life, her own journeys and wondered what fate lay upon this little life. Would she be a happy girl? Would she do well in school? What would her favourite colour be? The mother thought her little girl looked like a Purple Loving girl. But then, all girls loved purple. Maybe yellow? Would she grow up to be liked by everyone? Would she be an obedient girl? She was terrified of being accused of “not bringing up the little girl the right way”. Much like her own mother was. She lay there holding the little girl next to her, comforted by the company and scared of the responsibility. It was just the beginning and she was already thinking how it would end.
It wasn’t long before both mother and daughter drifted off into their respective worlds. At peace with their reunion, they both looked content yet tired because of the journey they had just been through. The rest of the people in the room hushed aside to let the smiling pair enjoy their well deserved sleep. It was, after all, just the beginning.
The rest in the room had seen all of this before. They were used new lives being born. They were not nervous while they wondered how the new mother would do. It seemed like mothers just knew how to go about taking care of their little lives. She spent nine months caring about her all alone in a way no one else could so it would be only natural for her to know how to continue that caring. That was all the thought they gave to it and they soon left the two alone as they shut the door behind them.
It was then that it all began…
